16
00:00:58,610 –> 00:01:03,290
Welcome to KELT, Kazakhstan English Language Theatre.

00:01:03,300 –> 00:01:04,180
(Audience) Woo!
18
00:01:04,210 –> 00:01:05,800

19
00:01:05,820 –> 00:01:07,730
(Applause)
20
00:01:07,750 –> 00:01:08,990
It’s a community of people
21
00:01:09,000 –> 00:01:12,850
who recognize the need for the arts and creative expression
22
00:01:12,870 –> 00:01:16,500
in order to grow and develop as contributing members of society.
23
00:01:16,530 –> 00:01:19,610
KELT始于2001年
KELT began in 2001
24
00:01:19,630 –> 00:01:22,530
as a student organization at KIMEP University.
25
00:01:22,560 –> 00:01:26,080
It was born when a couple of students went to the Dean of Student Affairs
26
00:01:26,090 –> 00:01:29,470
and asked if they could use theater plays to improve their English.
27
00:01:29,490 –> 00:01:34,200
He accepted, and through the consistency of putting on plays every semester
28
00:01:34,230 –> 00:01:36,860
KELT grew, not only into a student organization,
29
00:01:36,890 –> 00:01:39,630
but into a registered public fund.
30
00:01:39,650 –> 00:01:43,830
And over the years, KELT has had over 500 actors,
31
00:01:43,860 –> 00:01:48,530
we’ve received grants to perform all over Kazakhstan and Central Asia,
32
00:01:48,560 –> 00:01:51,390
and we’ve also created a thriving community of people
33
00:01:51,400 –> 00:01:53,450
who considered KELT their home.
34
00:01:54,040 –> 00:01:56,030
So, I joined KELT in 2011,
35
00:01:56,050 –> 00:02:00,030
when I first came to Kazakhstan to teach at an educational center.
36
00:02:00,060 –> 00:02:04,840
I directed a few smaller plays for them, then they asked me to direct “Cinderella.”
37
00:02:04,870 –> 00:02:07,270
And we wanted to take KELT to a new level,
38
00:02:07,300 –> 00:02:10,610
to make it bigger, and better, and more professional then before.
39
00:02:10,630 –> 00:02:12,340
And that’s what happened.
40
00:02:12,370 –> 00:02:16,010
“灰姑娘”成为第一个获得百老汇授权的剧作
“Cinderella” became the first licensed Broadway production
41
00:02:16,030 –> 00:02:19,050
to be entirely produced in Kazakhstan.
42
00:02:19,080 –> 00:02:20,460
Let’s take a short look.
43
00:02:20,490 –> 00:02:21,720
(Applause)
44
00:02:21,740 –> 00:02:24,650
(Music)
45
00:03:01,080 –> 00:03:02,080
(Music ends)
46
00:03:02,110 –> 00:03:05,680
(Applause)
47
00:03:05,710 –> 00:03:07,090
So, in order to do this show,
48
00:03:07,120 –> 00:03:11,750
we received donations, funding both locally and abroad.
49
00:03:11,770 –> 00:03:15,520
And thanks to our awesome marketing team we actually were fortunate
50
00:03:15,550 –> 00:03:18,530
to sell out all of our shows before opening night.
51
00:03:18,540 –> 00:03:21,670
So, it was really a truly amazing experience.
52
00:03:21,710 –> 00:03:24,410
But I think for me personally, the most amazing thing
53
00:03:24,440 –> 00:03:27,190
was to see the transformation of our actors.
54
00:03:27,220 –> 00:03:32,440
Because I remember during casting, we had about 110 I think people audition,
55
00:03:32,470 –> 00:03:34,650
and I remember thinking, “Oh, my goodness,
56
00:03:34,670 –> 00:03:37,090
how are we going to turn them into ballroom dancers,
57
00:03:37,120 –> 00:03:39,540
they can’t even dance a Two-Step.”
58
00:03:39,570 –> 00:03:42,350
Or thinking, you know, “We’re never going to find a singer
59
00:03:42,370 –> 00:03:46,800
who didn’t sound like an off-key-wannabe-diva-popstar.”
60
00:03:46,830 –> 00:03:49,370
But through a tremendous amount of hard work
61
00:03:49,390 –> 00:03:53,580
I think our actors even shocked themselves at their own transformation.
62
00:03:53,600 –> 00:03:56,200
And so, connecting to the theme tonight,
63
00:03:56,220 –> 00:04:00,230
the performance the audience saw was the bright side of the moon.
64
00:04:00,260 –> 00:04:02,070
But the other side of the moon
65
00:04:02,090 –> 00:04:04,140
was the countless hours of work
66
00:04:04,170 –> 00:04:08,370
for seven months, three hours a night, four to six nights a week
67
00:04:08,400 –> 00:04:12,890
after an eight-hour work day or a full schedule of classes,
68
00:04:12,910 –> 00:04:16,080
of performing, acting, singing, and dancing –
69
00:04:16,110 –> 00:04:17,870
it was a lot of work.
70
00:04:17,900 –> 00:04:22,710
But yet, they did for the love of theatre and also for the love of each other.
71
00:04:23,520 –> 00:04:27,770
And just like the committed volunteers of TEDx who made this conference happen,
72
00:04:27,790 –> 00:04:30,340
all of our directors, our crew, our actors,
73
00:04:30,360 –> 00:04:33,790
they all volunteered their time because of what they love.
74
00:04:34,390 –> 00:04:38,440
And so tonight I would like to present to you a short medley from “Cinderella.”
75
00:04:38,480 –> 00:04:41,740
About to perform for you are just a couple of students,
76
00:04:41,760 –> 00:04:45,900
professors, bankers, lawyers, teachers, programmers –
77
00:04:45,920 –> 00:04:46,830
Enjoy!
78
00:04:46,860 –> 00:04:48,870
(Applause)
79
00:04:49,710 –> 00:04:53,160
(Music)
80
00:04:57,180 –> 00:05:01,100
Topher (speaks): They nag me. I do not know how to be a king.
81
00:05:01,120 –> 00:05:02,350
(Sighs)
82
00:05:02,380 –> 00:05:04,060
So I wonder –
83
00:05:04,080 –> 00:05:08,560
(Sings) Me, who am I?
84
00:05:08,580 –> 00:05:13,590
A far from perfect guy.
85
00:05:13,620 –> 00:05:18,320
A bum who wants to do what’s right But often does what’s wrong.
86
00:05:18,350 –> 00:05:23,220
A kid whose voice is way off key But loves to sing a song.
87
00:05:23,240 –> 00:05:28,260
A guy who dreams like a lion But wakes up like a lamb.
88
00:05:28,290 –> 00:05:33,210
Me, who am I But the guy I am?
89
00:05:33,240 –> 00:05:36,370
That’s who’m I.
90
00:05:36,400 –> 00:05:41,050
Knights: His Royal Highness Christopher Rupert
91
00:05:41,090 –> 00:05:45,770
Slayer of dragons Pitiless to ogres
92
00:05:45,790 –> 00:05:50,280
Destroyer of griffins and giants No friend to gargoyles
93
00:05:50,300 –> 00:05:55,090
Nice to the needy Sportsman and poet
94
00:05:55,110 –> 00:05:59,950
A guy who dreams like lion But wakes up like a lamb.
95
00:05:59,990 –> 00:06:04,840
Topher: Me, who am I But the guy I am?
96
00:06:04,870 –> 00:06:07,210
Knights: He’s our hero. Topher (speaks): Oh, stop!
97
00:06:07,230 –> 00:06:09,940
Knights: Such perfection! Topher: That’s very kind of you.
98
00:06:09,970 –> 00:06:12,900
Knights: He’s the kind of guy Who we’d all like to be
99
00:06:12,920 –> 00:06:14,190
Topher: I appreciate that.
100
00:06:14,230 –> 00:06:17,810
Knights: What’s the use of Self-reflection?
101
00:06:17,840 –> 00:06:18,710
Topher: Too much?
102
00:06:18,740 –> 00:06:23,450
Knights: Church bells will ring When you are king
103
00:06:23,480 –> 00:06:26,040
People will sing
104
00:06:26,070 –> 00:06:28,970
There is no one quite like –
105
00:06:29,010 –> 00:06:33,790
Topher (sings): Me, who am I?
106
00:06:33,820 –> 00:06:38,430
A far from perfect guy
107
00:06:39,190 –> 00:06:44,400
A jerk who wants to do what’s right But often does what’s wrong
108
00:06:44,430 –> 00:06:49,710
A drip who’s voice is way off key But loves to sing a song
109
00:06:49,730 –> 00:06:55,300
A dope who dreams like a lion But wakes up like a lamb
110
00:06:55,330 –> 00:07:00,460
Me, who am I But the guy I am?
111
00:07:00,480 –> 00:07:06,010
Yes, that’s who’m I.
112
00:07:06,040 –> 00:07:12,050
That’s who am I.
113
00:07:17,210 –> 00:07:20,380
Knights: What a guy!
114
00:07:20,410 –> 00:07:21,340
All: Ha!
115
00:07:21,380 –> 00:07:23,770
(Applause)
116
00:07:23,790 –> 00:07:25,330
(Music)
117
00:07:28,920 –> 00:07:33,370
Ella: A lovely night A lovely night
118
00:07:33,410 –> 00:07:37,910
A finer night you know you’ll never see
119
00:07:37,940 –> 00:07:42,750
You meet your prince A charming prince
120
00:07:42,780 –> 00:07:46,840
As charming as a prince will ever be!
121
00:07:47,540 –> 00:07:52,470
The stars in a hazy heaven Tremble above you
122
00:07:52,500 –> 00:07:57,020
While he is whispering “Darling, I love you!”
123
00:07:57,040 –> 00:08:01,610
You say good-bye Away you fly
124
00:08:01,640 –> 00:08:06,560
But on your lips you keep a kiss All your life you’ll dream of this
125
00:08:06,580 –> 00:08:10,450
Lovely, lovely night.
126
00:08:10,480 –> 00:08:13,640
Madame (speaks): Ah, Charlotte, why don’t you sing, darling please?
127
00:08:13,660 –> 00:08:16,070
Ella: No! Gabrielle: Yes, yes, please!
128
00:08:16,090 –> 00:08:18,930
Charlotte (speaks): Okay, but it’s not going to be good.
129
00:08:20,560 –> 00:08:25,170
Charlotte (sings): A lovely night A lovely night
130
00:08:25,200 –> 00:08:27,930

All: The stars in a hazy heaven Tremble above you
136
00:08:44,120 –> 00:08:48,710
While he is whispering, Madame: “Darling, I love you!”
137
00:08:48,730 –> 00:08:53,350
All: You say good-bye Away you fly
138
00:08:53,370 –> 00:08:55,820
Ella & Gabrielle: But on your lips you keep a kiss
139
00:08:55,840 –> 00:08:58,520
Madame & Charlotte: All of your life you’ll dream of this
140
00:08:58,550 –> 00:09:03,030
All: Lovely, lovely night.
141
00:09:05,650 –> 00:09:10,650
All: The stars in a hazy heaven Tremble above you
142
00:09:10,670 –> 00:09:14,900
”While he is whispering, Gabrielle: “Darling, I love you!”
143
00:09:14,930 –> 00:09:19,610
All: You say – you say- good-bye Away you fly
144
00:09:19,640 –> 00:09:25,060
But on your lips you keep a kiss All of your life you’ll dream of this
145
00:09:25,100 –> 00:09:27,030
美好,
Lovely,
146
00:09:27,050 –> 00:09:29,150
美好,
Lovely,
147
00:09:29,190 –> 00:09:30,870
美好,
Lovely,
148
00:09:30,900 –> 00:09:33,570
Lovely night!
149
00:09:37,220 –> 00:09:40,330
(All sigh)
150
00:09:40,360 –> 00:09:43,870
(Giggling) Let’s go, let’s go!
151
00:09:43,890 –> 00:09:45,100
Marie: Cinderella?
152
00:09:45,130 –> 00:09:49,640
Impossible for a plain yellow pumpkin To become a golden carriage.
153
00:09:50,810 –> 00:09:52,310
不可能
Impossible
154
00:09:52,340 –> 00:09:56,730
For a plain country bumpkin And a prince to join in marriage
155
00:09:56,750 –> 00:10:00,650
And four white mice Will never be four white horses
156
00:10:00,670 –> 00:10:04,630
Such fol-der-ol and fiddle-dy-dee Of course is …
157
00:10:04,660 –> 00:10:06,640
Impossible!
158
00:10:08,250 –> 00:10:12,650
But the world is full of zanies and fools
159
00:10:12,690 –> 00:10:16,540
Who don’t believe in sensible rules
160
00:10:16,580 –> 00:10:20,280
And won’t believe what sensible people say
161
00:10:20,320 –> 00:10:24,680
And because these daft and dewy-eyed dopes Keep building up impossible hopes
162
00:10:24,700 –> 00:10:30,860
Impossible things are happening every day!
163
00:10:32,770 –> 00:10:34,670
Ella: Impossible.
164
00:10:34,700 –> 00:10:36,580
Marie: Impossible.
165
00:10:36,610 –> 00:10:38,550
Ella: Impossible.
166
00:10:38,570 –> 00:10:40,600
Marie: Impossible.
167
00:10:40,620 –> 00:10:42,530
Ella: Impossible.
168
00:10:42,560 –> 00:10:44,510
Marie: Impossible.
169
00:10:44,530 –> 00:10:47,770
Ella & Marie: Impossible!
170
00:10:49,250 –> 00:10:53,550
Ella: But the world is full of zanies and fools
171
00:10:53,590 –> 00:10:57,500
Who don’t believe in sensible rules
172
00:10:57,530 –> 00:11:01,240
And won’t believe what sensible people say
173
00:11:01,270 –> 00:11:03,890
Ella & Marie: And because these daft and dewy-eyed dopes
174
00:11:03,910 –> 00:11:05,690
Keep building up impossible hopes
175
00:11:05,720 –> 00:11:07,900
Impossible things are happening
176
00:11:07,930 –> 00:11:13,740
every day!
177
00:11:14,750 –> 00:11:16,190
Marie (speaks): Some magic …
178
00:11:16,200 –> 00:11:18,810
(Music)
179
00:11:29,600 –> 00:11:30,970
Marie (speaks): It’s worked.
180
00:11:31,280 –> 00:11:32,410
It’s worked!
181
00:11:37,160 –> 00:11:39,130
Ella (speaks): Fairy godmother,
182
00:11:39,150 –> 00:11:43,520
it’s the most beautiful gown in all the land!
183
00:11:43,560 –> 00:11:46,560
Marie (speaks): It’s, Cinderella, I must tell you
184
00:11:46,580 –> 00:11:51,270
all this magic is very powerful, but it will end at midnight tonight.
185
00:11:51,300 –> 00:11:53,880
So, go to the ball in the name of every girl
186
00:11:53,900 –> 00:11:56,500
who’s ever wanted to go to a ball in a beautiful dress,
187
00:11:56,520 –> 00:11:57,770
and change the world.
188
00:11:57,790 –> 00:12:02,130
Just go, with a promise of possibilities!
189
00:12:02,170 –> 00:12:04,370
(Music)
190
00:12:09,620 –> 00:12:10,670
Ella: It’s possible.
191
00:12:10,690 –> 00:12:11,710
Marie: It’s possible.
192
00:12:11,740 –> 00:12:12,800
Ella: It’s possible.
193
00:12:12,810 –> 00:12:13,810
Marie: It’s possible.
194
00:12:13,840 –> 00:12:14,800
Ella: It’s possible.
195
00:12:14,820 –> 00:12:15,830
Marie: It’s possible.
196
00:12:15,860 –> 00:12:21,400
Ella (with Choral): It’s possible!
197
00:12:22,890 –> 00:12:24,270
A-a!
198
00:12:26,420 –> 00:12:29,340
(Applause)
199
00:12:29,390 –> 00:12:31,850
(Music)
200
00:12:33,380 –> 00:12:37,280
Topher: Ten minutes ago, I saw you
201
00:12:37,300 –> 00:12:42,220
I looked up when you came through the door
202
00:12:42,240 –> 00:12:47,150
My head started reeling You gave me the feeling
203
00:12:47,170 –> 00:12:50,650
The room had no ceiling or floor.
204
00:12:51,430 –> 00:12:55,610
Ten minutes ago, I met you
205
00:12:55,640 –> 00:13:00,660
And we murmured our “How do you do’s?”
206
00:13:00,690 –> 00:13:05,800
I wanted to ring out the bells And fling out my arms
207
00:13:05,820 –> 00:13:08,580
And to sing out the news
208
00:13:09,330 –> 00:13:13,730
“我找到她了,她是一个天使
“I have found her, she’s an angel
209
00:13:13,760 –> 00:13:18,370
With the dust of the stars in her eyes
210
00:13:18,390 –> 00:13:22,860
We are dancing, we are flying
211
00:13:22,890 –> 00:13:27,390
And she’s taking me back to the skies.”
212
00:13:28,090 –> 00:13:32,070
In the arms of my love, I’m flying
213
00:13:32,090 –> 00:13:36,700
Over mountain and meadow and glen
214
00:13:36,720 –> 00:13:41,600
And I like it so well That for all I can tell
215
00:13:41,630 –> 00:13:45,720
I may never come down again.
216
00:13:45,740 –> 00:13:46,460
Ella: Ah!
217
00:13:46,460 –> 00:13:48,580
Topher (speaks): I’m sorry to be so effusive,
218
00:13:48,600 –> 00:13:51,700
I just met you, I’m not usually like this with someone I just met.
219
00:13:51,710 –> 00:13:54,630
That’s like, jeez, I just feel like, What am I doing here?
220
00:13:54,650 –> 00:13:56,140
Ella (speaks): I feel the same.
221
00:13:56,150 –> 00:13:57,410
Topher: Like such a phony.
222
00:13:57,420 –> 00:13:58,520
Ella: So do I.
223
00:13:59,500 –> 00:14:00,620
Topher: You do?
224
00:14:00,650 –> 00:14:01,530
Ella: Yes.
225
00:14:01,550 –> 00:14:03,170
Topher: Me too! My name is –
226
00:14:03,200 –> 00:14:05,580
Ella: Topher, short for Christopher, yes, I know.
227
00:14:05,590 –> 00:14:07,170
Topher: Have we met before?
228
00:14:07,200 –> 00:14:10,880
Ella: Yes, and we are seeing each other for the first time right now.
229
00:14:11,980 –> 00:14:16,820
(Sings) Ten minutes ago, I met you
230
00:14:16,840 –> 00:14:22,100
And we murmured our “How do you do’s?”
231
00:14:22,130 –> 00:14:25,880
I wanted to ring out the bells
232
00:14:25,910 –> 00:14:27,980
And fling out my arms
233
00:14:28,010 –> 00:14:31,520
And to sing out the news
234
00:14:31,840 –> 00:14:36,850
“我找他了,我找到他了!”
“I have found him, I have found him!”
235
00:14:36,880 –> 00:14:38,800
(Music)
236
00:14:52,310 –> 00:14:57,570
Ella & Topher: In the arms of my love, I’m flying
237
00:14:57,580 –> 00:15:02,010
Over mountain and meadow and glen
238
00:15:02,030 –> 00:15:07,290
And I like it so well That for all I can tell
239
00:15:07,320 –> 00:15:11,710
I may never come down again.
240
00:15:12,320 –> 00:15:16,870
I may never come down to earth
241
00:15:16,900 –> 00:15:20,190
永远。
again.
242
00:15:20,480 –> 00:15:23,380
(Music)
243
00:15:33,120 –> 00:15:42,270

Choral: Ten minutes ago, I met you And we murmured our “How do you do’s?”
244
00:15:42,290 –> 00:15:47,570
I wanted to ring out the bells And fling out my arms
245
00:15:47,600 –> 00:15:50,510
And to sing out the news.
246
00:15:51,080 –> 00:15:55,510
I have found – I have found – an angel
247
00:15:55,530 –> 00:15:59,980

All: We are dancing, we are flying
249
00:16:04,480 –> 00:16:08,780
Knights: And she’s taking me back to the stars – to the stars
250
00:16:08,820 –> 00:16:14,040
All: In the arms of my love, I’m flying – I am flying
251
00:16:14,060 –> 00:16:17,910
Over mountain and meadow and glen
252
00:16:17,930 –> 00:16:22,640
And I like it so well That for all I can tell
253
00:16:22,650 –> 00:16:26,990
I may never come down again.

00:16:27,370 –> 00:16:29,560
