Human insight | Kyung Lah | TEDxTokyo

Posts

Kyung Lah believes television journalism can be a great equalizer, including the voiceless and defenseless in our global conversation and moving the masses to demand change from those in power.

As CNN’s Tokyo-based international correspondent, she’s covered a lot of dramatic stories, including the school shooting in Newtown – Connecticut, the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 over the Pacific, and the crash of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 in the Ukraine.
On March 2011, Lah was in Tokyo as the 9.0 earthquake struck Japan. She remained in Japan covering the 15,000 killed in the tsunami.

This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but inde-pendently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

1
00:00:09,619 –> 00:00:11,161
Hello. You may be wondering

2
00:00:11,161 –> 00:00:15,240
why I am starting with a picture
of a vending machine.

3
00:00:15,700 –> 00:00:19,067
Well, at 2:45 in the afternoon
on March 11th,

4
00:00:19,067 –> 00:00:22,791
this vending machine
was the centerpiece of my workday.

5
00:00:22,791 –> 00:00:25,797
A classic Japan story
that the international press loves,

6
00:00:25,797 –> 00:00:29,065
and that the international audience
typically equates with Japan –

7
00:00:29,065 –> 00:00:32,809
quirky Japan, something new,
interesting, but technology.

8
00:00:32,809 –> 00:00:35,839
Using a camera and facial
recognition technology,

9
00:00:35,839 –> 00:00:40,332
this vending machine will tell you
what drink you should have,

10
00:00:40,332 –> 00:00:42,542
based on your gender and how you look.

11
00:00:42,542 –> 00:00:43,748
(Laughter)

12
00:00:43,748 –> 00:00:44,943
是的。
Yeah.

13
00:00:44,943 –> 00:00:46,576
Peach soda for me.

14
00:00:46,876 –> 00:00:48,614
Not too bad.

15
00:00:49,284 –> 00:00:53,796
There is a cliché
that life changes in an instant.

16
00:00:54,526 –> 00:00:58,774
Perhaps it’s so used
because it is so true.

17
00:01:01,268 –> 00:01:07,068
At 2:46, the very next minute,
for most of us, time stopped.

18
00:01:07,978 –> 00:01:11,520
We felt the strongest earthquake

19
00:01:12,380 –> 00:01:15,572
most people ever feel
in their entire life.

20
00:01:15,572 –> 00:01:20,646
But for the tsunami region,
just north of where we are here in Tokyo,

21
00:01:21,536 –> 00:01:25,509
thirty minutes later,
many lost their lives.

22
00:01:26,059 –> 00:01:30,022
Destruction as far as the eye can see,

23
00:01:31,232 –> 00:01:33,802
and life changed for them forever.

24
00:01:34,622 –> 00:01:38,717
What I ask of you, two months later,

25
00:01:39,577 –> 00:01:41,469
“你在看吗?
“Are you looking,

26
00:01:41,469 –> 00:01:44,321
are you really looking
at the destruction?”

27
00:01:45,081 –> 00:01:47,988
I would ask that you look closer.

28
00:01:49,008 –> 00:01:50,508
Look small,

29
00:01:50,988 –> 00:01:53,368
and listen to the individual stories

30
00:01:54,288 –> 00:01:56,723
because that’s where
every single one of us

31
00:01:56,723 –> 00:01:58,383
can make a difference.

32
00:02:00,833 –> 00:02:02,746
This is nurse Fumiko Suzuki.

33
00:02:02,746 –> 00:02:05,099
I just want to share
a few of the people who I met

34
00:02:05,099 –> 00:02:07,447
who I found to be really extraordinary.

35
00:02:07,447 –> 00:02:13,644
She is retiring next year, she’s a nurse
at Rikuzentakata’s Takata hospital,

36
00:02:13,644 –> 00:02:17,481
one of the friendliest faces
I’ve ever seen.

37
00:02:19,051 –> 00:02:22,751
When I met her,
the jacket that she’s wearing,

38
00:02:22,751 –> 00:02:24,723
that scarf that she’s wearing there,

39
00:02:24,723 –> 00:02:26,831
all those clothes were all borrowed.

40
00:02:26,831 –> 00:02:29,884
She lost everything in the tsunami,
all of her possessions,

41
00:02:29,884 –> 00:02:33,034
her house, her friends, her family.

42
00:02:34,164 –> 00:02:40,443
But she says that does not compare
to what she really lost that day.

43
00:02:41,823 –> 00:02:46,864
This is where she was standing –
the fourth floor of Takata hospital.

44
00:02:47,604 –> 00:02:51,386
And I will use her words here

45
00:02:51,386 –> 00:02:54,651
because I found her words
to be much more powerful.

46
00:02:54,651 –> 00:02:58,975
She said, “The patients couldn’t walk” –

47
00:02:58,975 –> 00:03:02,646
she was treating patients
in the 4th floor,

48
00:03:02,646 –> 00:03:06,825
patients who were already injured
because of the tsunami.

49
00:03:06,825 –> 00:03:10,770
And she said, “The wave
was as high as the window” –

50
00:03:10,770 –> 00:03:12,168
she saw the tsunami.

51
00:03:12,168 –> 00:03:14,906
“如果我试图挽救这位濒死的病人,
“If I tried to save this patient
who was lying on the bed,

52
00:03:14,906 –> 00:03:17,310
I would have lost my life as well.”

53
00:03:17,980 –> 00:03:20,420
‘我很抱歉’,我告诉这个女人,
“I’m sorry,” I told this woman,

54
00:03:20,420 –> 00:03:22,448
and I ran upstairs.

55
00:03:22,448 –> 00:03:25,583
It is the biggest regret I have.

56
00:03:26,513 –> 00:03:30,032
Twelve patients drowned
in their beds that day.

57
00:03:30,562 –> 00:03:36,105
A woman who had dedicated
her life to trying to save lives

58
00:03:36,105 –> 00:03:37,719
had to make a choice:

59
00:03:37,719 –> 00:03:42,508
Do I follow the mission in my life
and stay here with my patients?

60
00:03:42,508 –> 00:03:44,595
Or do I try to save my life?

61
00:03:44,595 –> 00:03:46,508
It was a critical choice.

62
00:03:46,508 –> 00:03:47,969
And when I met up with her –

63
00:03:47,969 –> 00:03:52,006
because she had decided
to run up to the top of the hospital.

64
00:03:52,006 –> 00:03:54,821
I think we would all say
she was forced to make that choice.

65
00:03:54,821 –> 00:03:56,199
She wouldn’t leave her job.

66
00:03:56,199 –> 00:03:57,725
她说,
She said,

67
00:03:57,725 –> 00:04:00,695
“无论我的境况如何,
我都会留在这里。
“Whatever my situation, I will stay here.

68
00:04:00,695 –> 00:04:04,626
Helping patients now will be my cure.”

69
00:04:05,266 –> 00:04:10,071
The doctors and the nurses
are the ones who need help,

70
00:04:10,071 –> 00:04:13,269
people just like nurse Suzuki.

71
00:04:13,949 –> 00:04:16,420
But they don’t have the time to get it.

72
00:04:18,110 –> 00:04:21,264
This – and I’m sorry
for the poor composition here,

73
00:04:21,264 –> 00:04:23,531
I’m a reporter, not a photographer –

74
00:04:23,531 –> 00:04:26,042
but the gentleman wearing the red jacket

75
00:04:26,632 –> 00:04:28,613
is the father of the family.

76
00:04:28,923 –> 00:04:31,197
The two boys standing
next to him are his sons,

77
00:04:31,197 –> 00:04:34,033
and the woman
wearing the mask is his wife.

78
00:04:34,373 –> 00:04:36,530
This is the Sugawara family.

79
00:04:36,810 –> 00:04:42,054
I was walking into Rikuzentakata
Junior High School

80
00:04:42,684 –> 00:04:45,979
and they pulled up in a white Sedan.

81
00:04:46,399 –> 00:04:50,922
And inside that vehicle,
as children looked on,

82
00:04:50,922 –> 00:04:53,390
was the body of their 16-year-old son,

83
00:04:53,390 –> 00:04:55,280
Hiroki Sugawara.

84
00:04:55,940 –> 00:04:59,793
They had nowhere to take him.

85
00:05:00,453 –> 00:05:02,303
In the aftermath of the tsunami,

86
00:05:02,303 –> 00:05:04,848
there were so many bodies,
the crematoriums were full,

87
00:05:04,848 –> 00:05:06,191
there was no gasoline.

88
00:05:06,191 –> 00:05:11,073
They decided they were going to honor
their son’s life as best as they could,

89
00:05:11,073 –> 00:05:15,723
and bring him to his friends
and have a proper funeral.

90
00:05:16,373 –> 00:05:20,488
His friend, Hiroki, told me –
I’m going to use his words again here,

91
00:05:20,488 –> 00:05:22,924
excuse me, while I shuffle my notes –

92
00:05:22,924 –> 00:05:26,075
“我失去了我最好的朋友弘利。
“I’ve lost my best friend, Hiroki.

93
00:05:26,655 –> 00:05:31,354
Hiroki died young.
He should have lived a long life.”

94
00:05:33,024 –> 00:05:36,244
All across Rikuzentakata,
life was cut short,

95
00:05:36,574 –> 00:05:40,712
and a father tried
to take control of his life

96
00:05:40,712 –> 00:05:45,293
by trying to honor his son
the very best that he could.

97
00:05:45,293 –> 00:05:48,364
And so, for a few moments,
it was only ten minutes,

98
00:05:48,364 –> 00:05:51,137
he tried to provide him a funeral.

99
00:05:51,137 –> 00:05:55,215
And at the end
of this ten-minute car side funeral,

100
00:05:55,215 –> 00:05:58,518
he said something
so extraordinary to those children,

101
00:05:58,518 –> 00:06:02,099
children who he wanted to say,
“Remember, don’t give up.”

102
00:06:02,099 –> 00:06:07,611
He said, “Don’t give up hope.
Keep living for my son.”

103
00:06:09,281 –> 00:06:14,070
But the story that I will probably
never forget in my entire life,

104
00:06:14,070 –> 00:06:17,048
that will always stay with me
as a journalist, is this one.

105
00:06:17,048 –> 00:06:20,541
This is Ishinomaki
Okawa Elementary School.

106
00:06:20,541 –> 00:06:24,361
I have to say I’m biologically predisposed
to feeling something for the story

107
00:06:24,361 –> 00:06:26,389
because you just heard how I can eat,

108
00:06:26,389 –> 00:06:29,389
it’s because I’m pregnant,
I’m five-months pregnant –

109
00:06:29,389 –> 00:06:32,817
three months pregnant at the time
that I arrived at this school.

110
00:06:33,587 –> 00:06:40,558
And this school was the scene of a horror
that most of us can never comprehend.

111
00:06:42,188 –> 00:06:46,165
Inside the school were 108 children.

112
00:06:46,975 –> 00:06:50,486
When the earthquake hit,
they all evacuated out,

113
00:06:50,486 –> 00:06:54,599
it was what they had practiced,
it’s what they were drilled to do.

114
00:06:55,229 –> 00:06:59,107
And they were lining up
and walking to the buses.

115
00:06:59,977 –> 00:07:04,102
They had no idea the tsunami was coming.

116
00:07:05,272 –> 00:07:11,475
In the aftermath of the tsunami,
74 of the 108 children died.

117
00:07:12,835 –> 00:07:16,620
The shoes of the children were recovered,
their bodies were not.

118
00:07:16,620 –> 00:07:18,027
Many of them have now been

119
00:07:18,027 –> 00:07:20,501
but there are still children
who are missing.

120
00:07:22,201 –> 00:07:25,970
That’s about 75%
of that elementary school.

121
00:07:26,830 –> 00:07:28,935
This is Keiko Naganuma.

122
00:07:28,935 –> 00:07:32,972
When I met her,
she, as you can see, was smiling.

123
00:07:32,972 –> 00:07:35,772
She was sitting there
with her six-year-old son, Ran.

124
00:07:36,232 –> 00:07:42,031
And she counted on her fingers
how many people she had lost that day –

125
00:07:42,881 –> 00:07:46,177
seven to eight family members,
among them her mother

126
00:07:46,177 –> 00:07:49,042
and her eight-year-old son, Koto.

127
00:07:49,042 –> 00:07:51,635
He was at the school that day.

128
00:07:52,225 –> 00:07:54,834
He was presumed dead or missing.

129
00:07:55,654 –> 00:07:59,412
And as she’s recounting exactly
what happened at that school,

130
00:07:59,412 –> 00:08:01,029
she’s so pleasant,

131
00:08:01,029 –> 00:08:06,995
and I couldn’t understand –
how can you be so calm and so pleasant?

132
00:08:06,995 –> 00:08:11,051
And she said, and I’m going
to use her words again here,

133
00:08:12,061 –> 00:08:15,783
“我并不好,
但我还有一个儿子。
“I am not OK, but I have another son.

134
00:08:16,373 –> 00:08:19,422
I can see that he’s pretending
to be happy.”

135
00:08:20,092 –> 00:08:25,054
And so, she joined in and she pretended.

136
00:08:27,084 –> 00:08:29,950
I went back to the school just last week.

137
00:08:30,680 –> 00:08:36,092
Two months on, the parents
can no longer pretend.

138
00:08:36,092 –> 00:08:39,792
There is construction outside,
you can see that there are flowers,

139
00:08:39,792 –> 00:08:41,804
the school’s in the background.

140
00:08:41,804 –> 00:08:43,586
They can no longer pretend

141
00:08:43,586 –> 00:08:47,224
that this is some horror
that will disappear the next day.

142
00:08:47,614 –> 00:08:49,445
The pain is real.

143
00:08:51,055 –> 00:08:53,928
This is a grandfather who I met.

144
00:08:54,578 –> 00:08:55,957
Coming to this hill

145
00:08:55,957 –> 00:09:00,448
to watch the construction
at this school every single day.

146
00:09:01,508 –> 00:09:03,584
He does not miss a day.

147
00:09:04,284 –> 00:09:06,887
And when I asked him,
“Why are you coming here?”

148
00:09:06,887 –> 00:09:09,982
it’s so he can be close
to his grandchildren.

149
00:09:09,982 –> 00:09:13,220
He lost two of his grandchildren that day.

150
00:09:14,040 –> 00:09:16,587
Two, inside that elementary school.

151
00:09:17,237 –> 00:09:20,133
And he told me,
“They left in the morning saying,

152
00:09:20,133 –> 00:09:23,017
‘いってきます’,我走了。
‘Itekimas’ – I’m leaving.

153
00:09:23,017 –> 00:09:25,365
I didn’t say goodbye to them.

154
00:09:25,785 –> 00:09:28,951
Now, I’ll never hear ‘hello’ from them.”

155
00:09:30,391 –> 00:09:34,739
This grandfather told me
that he has been told

156
00:09:34,739 –> 00:09:36,698
that he needs to pick up.

157
00:09:36,698 –> 00:09:38,538
He needs to, you know,

158
00:09:38,538 –> 00:09:43,260
show that Japanese spirit,
keep on living and keep going.

159
00:09:43,780 –> 00:09:46,479
But what he asked is, “How?

160
00:09:47,139 –> 00:09:49,633
Someone tell me how.”

161
00:09:51,853 –> 00:09:53,612
Two months on,

162
00:09:55,732 –> 00:10:01,870
this grandfather represents
an entire region that is hurting.

163
00:10:03,610 –> 00:10:10,467
Multiply now, his pain, his loss
for just one of those children

164
00:10:10,467 –> 00:10:12,729
25,000。
by 25,000.

165
00:10:12,729 –> 00:10:16,434
That’s how many people are presumed
dead or missing in that region.

166
00:10:16,434 –> 00:10:19,919
Take one of the stories
that I’ve shared with you

167
00:10:19,919 –> 00:10:26,360
and multiply that by 130,000 people.

168
00:10:26,640 –> 00:10:28,870
That’s how many people
are living on blankets

169
00:10:28,870 –> 00:10:31,212
still in the evacuation centers.

170
00:10:31,212 –> 00:10:32,991
For those of us who are Americans,

171
00:10:32,991 –> 00:10:35,897
that’s the population
of Cedar Rapids, Iowa,

172
00:10:35,897 –> 00:10:38,347
or of Savannah, Georgia.

173
00:10:38,347 –> 00:10:44,217
Entire cities have no place to go,
no infrastructure, no jobs.

174
00:10:44,217 –> 00:10:48,341
And if you speak to them,
they will tell you they are losing hope.

175
00:10:50,221 –> 00:10:54,952
In our 24-hour cable news network cycle

176
00:10:54,952 –> 00:11:00,740
where the Twitterati and the Facebookers
are ever shortening our attention span,

177
00:11:00,740 –> 00:11:07,186
we are now squarely in something
we referred to as “disaster fatigue.”

178
00:11:07,186 –> 00:11:12,145
It no longer surprises us
to see a gigantic boat

179
00:11:12,145 –> 00:11:15,167
in the middle of a neighborhood –

180
00:11:15,167 –> 00:11:19,403
a boat, by the way, that crushed the house
and killed the family inside.

181
00:11:19,853 –> 00:11:22,853
We’re growing numb to it,
it’s a little overwhelming.

182
00:11:22,853 –> 00:11:26,152
有太多的风景可看;
If you look at the landscape,
it’s almost too much,

183
00:11:26,152 –> 00:11:31,879
and if you think about the numbers,
it’s very difficult to comprehend.

184
00:11:33,829 –> 00:11:36,507
What I would ask of you,

185
00:11:37,007 –> 00:11:42,402
in an age where social media
can determine the conversation:

186
00:11:43,222 –> 00:11:45,251
Don’t look at the landscape,

187
00:11:45,831 –> 00:11:49,323
look closer, look small.

188
00:11:50,013 –> 00:11:53,250
If you look, there are individual stories,

189
00:11:53,720 –> 00:11:56,451
there is true human pain there.

190
00:11:57,431 –> 00:11:59,954
Disaster screams,

191
00:12:00,754 –> 00:12:05,064
recovery and true human pain whispers.

192
00:12:06,034 –> 00:12:07,858
They are whispering,

193
00:12:08,408 –> 00:12:11,001
they are expressing their pain.

194
00:12:11,751 –> 00:12:13,394
My question to you:

195
00:12:13,924 –> 00:12:15,744
Are you listening?

196
00:12:16,814 –> 00:12:18,383
Can you hear them?

197
00:12:20,263 –> 00:12:21,525
Thank you.

198
00:12:21,525 –> 00:12:23,058
(Applause)
